Description

The Broome County Office for Aging assists seniors and caregivers by providing the services and benefits that elders need to live independently. We offer these services both in the community and in the homes of Broome County elderly.

Our agency is a focal point for information. We help caregivers and older adults to get the services they need whether they are looking for information on healthy living or need care in their homes.

The Office for Aging:

· Promotes the dignity and independence of the older person
· Ensures that comprehensive and coordinated services are brought to bear on the needs of older persons
· Fosters public awareness of the value and contribution of older persons of the community

Programs and Services

CAREGIVER SERVICES
Information, training, consultation, respite, and support for families and
friends caring for the elderly

FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM (FGA)
Volunteer opportunities to work with children with special needs

HEALTH AND WELLNESS AND NUTRITION EDUCATION
Senior Games, exercise programs, health screenings, nutrition counseling,
Positive Aging Academy, Better Balance for Broome, and other special events

HEALTH INSURANCE
Information, Counseling & Assistance Program (HIICAP)
Health insurance counseling service provided by Action for Older Persons, Inc.

HOME CARE
Homemaker and personal care services for the homebound

HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (HEAP)
Certification process for help with energy expenses; weatherization referrals

LEGAL SERVICES FOR THE ELDERLY
Legal services provided by Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York

Healthy meals delivered to the homebound

MEDICAID & SNAP
Certification Assistance with applications for homebound seniors

OFA “ID” CARDS
Provides better access to buses and senior centers

RESOURCE CENTER
Helpful brochures and pamphlets on aging issues

SENIOR CENTERS
Nine sites throughout the County offering healthy meals, activities and recreation

SENIOR HELPERS PROGRAM
Referrals for in-home jobs with private employers for those age 55+

SENIOR NEWS
Articles include items of interest to seniors, including special events, health information,
Wellness activities, benefit programs and senior center activities.

SENIOR RESOURCE LINE
Information & Assistance Central source of information about
benefits, programs and services for seniors and caregivers

SHOPPER SERVICE
Grocery shopping for the homebound

SOCIAL ADULT DAY CENTER
(Yesteryears)
Socialization for frail elders or those with dementia. Program also provides family respite

TRANSPORTATION
Service provided by Broome Transit: OFA Mini Bus, BC Country and BC Lift
